theoretically speaking, of course…

Pop music at its finest cajoles the listener into a lull. A good lull, mind you. It entrances and entertains all the while summoning feelings that you at once haven’t felt before and also would hope to never surface in the company of friends. Even the closest of friends in the best of times. A simple pop song can make your clutch your shirt and sway to the beat, humming the tune and sing the words as if they were your own personal decree.

A great pop song doesn’t have to have a ton of frills or production techniques on display. Oftentimes, some of the best songs are little more than a melody and the voice will do the rest. If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, my take on pop music is by no means some new revelation of any sort but i begs repeating especially when I come across yet another example like in the case of Rivals by Amy Turnnidge, better known as Theoretical Girl. Theoretical Girl writes unapologetic pop music for the lovelorn. Melody is most definitely not an afterthought here and what you have is a smile from ear to ear. Rivals tells the tale of friends growing apart and the sadness that comes when that fact becomes blatantly apparent. I’m sure we’ve all felt that way from time to time, no.

So there you have it, friends. Fall in love with this gem like I have and pick up her debut record Divided just released yesterday via Memphis Industries.
