the gods of electro face off!

Here we go! Two of the heavyweights have their new albums drop Stateside! You’ve got the Pet Shop Boys on one corner and in the other…Depeche Mode! Who will outsell who? Will we hear more references of West End Girls than Personal Jesus? Will Chris Lowe ever take those sunglasses off ever again? These questions and possibly a bunch more may be answered when the stores and the throngs er…lines of synth-nerds, electro-freaks, new wave casualties and the like make their way to their local Walmart, Best Buy…or who am I kidding, log on to Amazon or I-Tunes to purchase their copies.

Pssst…I cheated. I pre-ordered both via Amazon! I’m very disheartened that I wasn’t able to snag a copy of the Mode prior to the release thus no review. I guess I can always do one once I give it a couple of listens, no?

crash test dummies are back in fashion…

I must say. A pretty cool video from the Depeche boys… What do you guys think?

I was born with the wrong sign

In the wrong house
with the wrong ascendancy
I took the wrong road
that lead to
the wrong tendencies
I was in the wrong place
at the wrong time
by the wrong reason and the wrong rhyme
On the wrong day of the wrong week
use the wrong method with the wrong technique”

And there it is. The debut of Wrong, the brand spanking new single from Depeche Mode taken from the forthcoming record Sounds Of The Universe. The song was performed live at the Echo Awards in Germany and naturally given a rousing ovation by those in attendance. What do we think, people? Have the Mode still got it? Have the Pet Shop Boys set the bar so high that DM flail in the wind in their attempts to reach the next upward rung?

Personally, I think Wrong is a strong single and is a fine addition to the DM discography which is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that Depeche Mode’s record for top notch singles needs no defense yet a curse in that there is nothing here that makes you believe that after all these years Martin Gore has had anything else happen besides pain, being on his knees, something S & M related or being God’s fault. Scope has never been DM’s forte. Yet it must be said that if you don’t care about any of that then enjoy Wrong and leave the navel-gazing and chin-stroking to scribes like yours truly. 🙂

welcome back, depressed mode!

Well, well, well… Look who’s back. It’s the Mode! Hot off the presses from comes the news of the release of their brand new record, Sounds of the Universe on 29 April via Mute/EMI which will be preceded by a single entitled Wrong. First off, I hate the album title. That’s more like something you would name some cheesy 60s television programme narrated by Leonard Nimoy or something and not a new record by the princes of electronic pop! According to the press release, Dave Gahan has written some tracks for the record along with Martin Gore. Word is Andrew Fletcher resumed his role as cheerleader and chief hand-clapper for the record as well. Hopefully Dave’s contributions are better than the dreck on his last solo record. As long as the record is on par with the highly underrated Playing The Angel and their best song since Enjoy The Silence in Lillian then I will have no complaints.

Hmm… Pet Shop Boys in March…Depeche Mode in April… Two titans of electro square off. 2009 is shaping up quite nicely, wouldn’t you say?
